Arlington’s Rich History of Over 450 Years:
Arlington was one of the first areas in the United States to be visited and settled by Europeans. Located on the St. Johns River, “Fort Caroline” was built by the French in 1564. During the mid-1800s river powered sawmills and plantations were established, and following the Civil War, residential building began in earnest sparking the steady growth of the Arlington community. Arlington grew rapidly in the post-World War II years and with the construction of the Matthews Bridge in 1953 opened the area to increased residential development. Over the next two decades Arlington became the fastest growing part of the Jacksonville area. Today, Arlington is a vibrant and diverse community experiencing a rapid rebirth highlighted by charming mid-century homes.
