    The Community of Mandarin

A great place to live, work and play, Mandarin is nestled on the eastern bank of the St. Johns River and is characterized by lush tropical foliage and magnificent century old oak trees draped with dramatic Spanish moss. This waterfront neighborhood boasts spectacular sunset views of the St. Johns River and its many bays and inlets. Considered an upscale neighborhood, Mandarin is a vibrant residential community, featuring beautiful homes and well landscaped yards and considered by many to be a boater’s paradise.

A bustling community, Mandarin is filled with restaurants, innovative retailers and upscale shopping.  Excellent public schools and parks make this a much desired neighborhood for any family. Mandarin is located just miles from glistening white sandy beaches, and minutes away from St. Johns Town Center, a 1.5 million-square-foot, open-air lifestyle shopping and dining center. Also, just around the corner, you will find modern hotels and the “Tinseltown” area, which is jumping with movie theaters, restaurants, specialty shops, and thriving nightlife.

Bordered by Interstate 295 and close to Intrastate 95 Mandarin offers easy access to downtown Jacksonville, Jacksonville International Airport and an abundance of fun attractions, parks and preserves, over 50 area golf courses, the Jacksonville Jaguar’s Stadium, and tons of fishing opportunities around every bend of the river.

    Mandarin’s Rich History:

Once the home of Timucua Indians the area was further settled in the 1700’s by English, French and Spanish explorers. Following the Civil War, soldiers, farmers, citrus growers and their families created a small farming community, shipping beef, oranges, grapefruit, lemons and other fruits and vegetables to other river settlements, and points north on the steamships, flatboats and canoes that navigated the St. Johns River.

In 1830, Mandarin was named for the Mandarin orange. In 1864, the Union steamship Maple Leaf, hit a Confederate mine and sank just off Mandarin Point. Calling Mandarin a “tropical paradise” Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin wintered in the village of Mandarin from 1867 to 1884.
